Traveling is one of the most rewarding, relaxing and healing activities that a person can do. No one needs a break from reality more than those in the emergency service industry, who are consistently exposed to things that will forever shape who they are. Whether it be noticeable at the moment or more subtle down the road, the mental strain of our job is ever present. In this short read, we will stress the importance of removing yourself from the unpredictable days at work by unplugging through travel.
With so many options, when you finally get a chance to utilize that hard-earned annual leave you’ve been saving, how do you dwindle down the when, where or what when deciding where to vacation?
Break Recommendations
Our answer: Choose between a mental-health retreat, a fun-filled vacation, or randomly choose a destination off of your bucket list. When it comes to getting that mental break from the everyday grind of shift work and responding to everyone’s emergencies, we recommend getting away, whether that be far or nearby. Going to a sanctuary you love can be the most healing thing you do. This can be done monthly, quarterly or once/twice a year for bigger, more expensive getaways.
A few examples for you: A short and simple retreat at a farm’s rental home, where you can enjoy a slower pace with only solitude and rejuvenation on your to-do list. We love the experience of going and collecting fresh eggs in the morning after helping feed some horses, donkeys and goats.
Another example would be a secluded stay in the woods, whether that be camping or glamping. A few of our more enjoyable vacations involved simply sitting in a cabin in the woods with a view. Imagine decompressing in a hot tub with your favorite drink, and lounging next to a cozy fireplace while allowing yourself to soak in nature’s beauty. Put that phone on silent and enjoy just being in the moment for a few hours a day.
It’s All About Self-Care
Want to try something a bit more sophisticated? A retreat or lodge with a spa will definitely help reset your mind, body and soul. Fellas, it’s OK to get those massages and pamper yourself a bit, it’s worth it and needed.
Lastly, who doesn’t love a quick trip to the beach to do some swimming and then nap in the warm sand? If you’re close enough like we are, that’s a short hour and a half drive, so an easy day trip. But if you’re a bit farther, make a plan to fly in or drive to your favorite beach and get that relaxation in as many times as possible during the warmer seasons.
When you remove yourself from the fire service and unplug, it can give you that mental health recharge that should be implemented by every organization. In time, you will learn this about yourself, that taking a break is what you NEED! Don’t be afraid to venture out while doing that shift swap or using annual leave. It will help extend your longevity and keep your mind sharp and in the game for years to come.
