Dr. Virginia Loewenstine, CEO and medical director of Tristate Preventive Health, answers your questions
Q: I am going through a divorce, and I am unsure how much I should tell people about it. What should I say if someone asks?
A: Divorce can be very difficult and going through one can affect many aspects of a person’s life. You, alone, should decide how much you want to talk about what you are going through. Many people may want to know what happened, especially if it was unexpected. If you do not want to discuss it, you can give a simple answer such as, “Yes, I am going through a divorce. Thank you for your concern,” and leave it at that.
It may be helpful for you to reach out to a mental health professional who can help you along the way when it comes to having conversations.
If the divorce process is affecting your ability to do your job, reach out and speak to your chief. You do not have to give details, just let him or her know you are going through a very difficult time.
