This isn’t about chasing elite performance or running marathons on your days off. It’s about helping the average firefighter feel better, last longer, and work smarter by improving one of the body’s most important (and neglected) systems.
Why your lungs deserve more attention
Firefighting is a full-body job, but your lungs are doing more work than you think, especially when you’re wearing 60+ pounds of gear, hauling tools, and operating in high-stress environments. Every task requires oxygen. And if your body can’t efficiently deliver and use that oxygen, performance breaks down.
We often talk about muscle fatigue, but your respiratory muscles can fatigue, too.When that happens, your heart rate spikes, your movements get sloppier, and your ability to recover between calls tanks. It’s not always your legs that give out; it might be your breathing.
VO2 Max: The Breathing Metric That Matters
If you want a hard number that reflects how well your body handles physical stress, VO2 Max is it. VO2 Max (maximal oxygen uptake) measures how much oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. It’s a direct window into your aerobic engine –how well your heart, lungs, and muscles work together under load.

- Lower VO2 Max = quicker fatigue, poorer recovery, and a higher risk of injury
In fact, research on tactical populations shows a strong link between VO2 Max and job performance, especially on fireground simulations that mimic real calls.Firefighters with higher VO2 Max scores complete tasks faster, recover more quickly, and perform more efficiently under pressure. The best part? VO2 Max isn’t fixed. You can improve it with the right kind of training, starting with your breathing mechanics.
Improving your respiratory fitness doesn’t require a mask simulator, a high-tech lab, or an extra hour at the gym. It starts with awareness and a few targeted habits.
- Nose breathing for efficiency
- Breathing through your nose activates your diaphragm, improves oxygen uptake, and helps regulate your stress response. Try nose-only breathing during warm-ups, easy walks, or even while driving. Start small, 5 to 10 minutes, and build up over time.
- Diaphragmatic, or belly breathing
- Diaphragmatic, or belly breathing, strengthens the muscles that power your breath. Lie on your back with one hand on your chest and one on your stomach. Breathe in slowly, aiming to expand your belly, not your chest. Do this for 10 breaths each day to retrain your breathing pattern.
- Box Breathing
- Box breathing is used by special ops and high-stress professions to manage stress and restore calm. Imagine your breathing as a box constructed of 4-second-long sides. Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, and repeat. Use this after calls, before bed, or any time you need to reset.
- Add breathing control to your workouts
- Don’t just go through the motions; train your breathing while training your body. Inhale through the nose during easier phases of a rep. Exhale through the mouth on exertion. Avoid holding your breath unless specifically training for that effect.
Boosting VO2 Max with Simple Conditioning
Once your breathing mechanics improve, you can start layering in aerobic conditioning that targets VO2 Max. For example, try longer, steady-state work like rucking or incline walking. This builds your aerobic base and helps your body use oxygen more efficiently. Also, try interval training, 30-60 seconds of hard work followed by 1-2 minutes of recovery. This pushes your VO2 Max ceiling by challenging your oxygen delivery system under stress.
Two to three well-structured sessions per week can make a measurable difference in 6-8 weeks.
Breathwork and Stress: A Tool for Control in Chaos
