Apparel from The Brotherhood Project turns everyday wear into a catalyst for mental‑health support

The fire service is built on brotherhood and sisterhood, trust, and showing up when it matters most. It’s a culture of strength, resilience, and always having each other’s backs. But behind that strength, there’s a reality that doesn’t get talked about enough, the weight we carry doesn’t always stay on the job, and not everyone feels comfortable speaking up when they’re struggling.

I started The Brotherhood Project after losing a captain, someone I respected deeply and looked up to, to mental health struggles. His loss hit me hard, not just because of who he was, but because I didn’t see the signs. He didn’t talk about what he was going through, and like so many others, he carried that weight in silence. That experience opened my eyes to a harsh reality: there is still a strong stigma around mental health, especially within the fire service and among men. Too often, people feel like they have to be tough, to push through, and to keep their struggles to themselves. That mindset is costing lives, and it needs to change.

The Brotherhood Project was created to help break that stigma.

Let’s Start Talking

At its core, this brand is about starting conversations. It’s about creating something simple, like a hat or a hoodie, that carries a deeper meaning. When someone sees the logo, or the name “The Brotherhood Project,” it’s meant to spark curiosity. It gives people an opportunity to ask questions, to connect, and to open the door to conversations that might not have happened otherwise. For someone who is struggling, that small moment could be everything. Sometimes all it takes is a single question, a quick check-in, or someone noticing.

One of the most important messages we carry is “One Call Away.” You’ll find it placed intentionally on our apparel, on the inside of a hat, along the side panel, or hidden in places where only the wearer might see it. It’s there as a constant reminder that no matter how tough things get, you are never alone. There is always someone willing to listen, someone willing to help, someone just one call away. At the same time, it’s also a message to others: be that person. Be the one who reaches out, checks in, and starts the conversation even when it’s uncomfortable.

Supporting Mental Health Through Action

Beyond the message, The Brotherhood Project is also about taking action. A portion of proceeds from every piece goes directly toward supporting mental health initiatives, especially those focused on first responders and individuals in high-stress environments. So far, we’ve been able to donate $1,000 to an incredible organization called Three Oaks Cabin, where first responders can find refuge from stress and anxiety.

Our next donation of $1,000 going toward Chat 4 Chad, another organization doing incredible work in the mental health space. This donation will be presented at their annual Gala on May 23. Chat 4 Chad focuses on youth mental health, working to provide education, awareness, and support for young people who may be struggling.

We are also organizing a golf tournament and silent auction in London, Ont., with proceeds going to Project Trauma Support. The tournament will take place on June 14, 2026, at Thames Valley Golf Club. Through this event, we are raising money through golfers, hole sponsors, a silent auction, and raffle prizes, all coming together to support an incredible cause. Project Trauma Support is dedicated to helping first responders and frontline workers who have experienced trauma.

Built on Connection and Purpose

The Brotherhood Project is more than just apparel. It’s a movement built on the idea that no one should have to go through their struggles alone. It’s about creating a community where people feel seen, supported, and comfortable speaking up. It’s about turning everyday items into reminders that mental health matters and that conversations can save lives.

This brand was born from loss, but it’s driven by purpose. Every piece we create, every conversation that starts, and every dollar raised is a step toward breaking the stigma and building something stronger. A brotherhood that extends beyond the fire service, beyond first responders, and into every community.

Because at the end of the day, no matter who you are or what you’re facing, someone is always one call away.
