Here’s a warm-up exercise that activates and loosens up your shoulders, improving range of motion and flexibility for better movement during firefighting tasks
This shoulder roll warm-up exercise is designed to improve shoulder mobility, stability, and overall upper body flexibility, which is critical for those of us who rely on strong, functional movement patterns during demanding shifts. The goal is to activate and engage the muscles around your shoulders and torso, helping you perform tasks like lifting, carrying, and reaching with greater ease and efficiency.
Shoulder Roll – Backward Instructions
- Stand tall with your arms in front, fingers touching, elbows at 90 degrees, and feet slightly wider than hip-width apart
- Elevate, retract, depress, and protract your scapula on one side as you perform the opposite movement on the other side
- One shoulder “chases” the other as you make backward circles with each shoulder
- Perform repetitions at a slow tempo through your full range of motion for 30 seconds
- Increase tempo to create a more dynamic movement for another 30 seconds
- Allow for subtle rotation through your torso, hips, and legs while anchoring into the ground with your feet
Shoulder Roll – Forward Instructions
- Stand tall with your arms in front, fingers touching, elbows at 90 degrees, and feet slightly wider than hip-width apart
- Depress, retract, elevate, and protract your scapula on one side as you perform the opposite movement on the other side
- One shoulder “chases” the other as you make forward circles with each shoulder
