Dr. Virginia Loewenstine, CEO and medical director of Tristate Preventive Health, answers your questions
Q: I still get an erection but it’s not as hard as it used to be. Why?
A: Erectile dysfunction is a result of not enough blood flow to the penis, or the muscles of the penis do not relax. This could be the result of an underlying physical or psychological condition or both. The list of causes is long. Examples include diseases of the heart, obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, certain medications, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, stress and others. It is best to get this checked out and have any underlying conditions treated.
Q: Do I have to have problems with an erection to get Viagra/Cialis?
A: Viagra/Cialis is predominately prescribed for erectile dysfunction but can also be prescribed for “sex that is not satisfying.” Start an honest conversation with your doctor to see if you should give it a try.
Q: I heard that balsamic vinegar could help with an erection? Is this true?
A: Yes, balsamic vinegar contains nitrites which are converted into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a powerful vasodilator, relaxing the blood vessels to allow for more blood flow to the penis, thereby helping produce an erection. Balsamic vinegar also provides the benefits of lowering blood sugar, lowering cholesterol and even aids in healthy digestion. All good things!
