Dr. Virginia Loewenstine, CEO and medical director of Tristate Preventive Health, answers your questions

Q: Why do I feel so alienated when I need to book off for a shift or two to deal with an injury?

A: First off, even superheroes get hurt and need time to heal. We know firefighters are always looking out for others and often, this can create an “I am invincible” mentality.

Take the time and follow your doctor’s treatment plan. Feeling alienated comes from thinking you are slacking or letting your team down.

Remember, if you are not 100% able to do your job, you not only put yourself in harm’s way but also your co-workers. Take care of yourself first so you can keep yourself and others safe. Give yourself permission to do this.
