Frontline insights reveal the features firefighters want built into the next generation of protective gear
Firefighters worldwide know what the next generation of protective gear should deliver — if we’re intentional enough to capture those ideas before they disappear.
Ever have an idea that’s so good you convince yourself you’ll remember it later? It almost never happens, right?
The solution is to be intentional about remembering important things. Make a list, record a voice memo, or tell someone else. The key is to not just trust your memory.
Like us, we’re betting there have been times on the job when you think to yourself something like, “It would be really great to have …” Or, “You know what would be really useful? …” But it never goes anywhere. Why? Because we forget. It’s time to be intentional, and one good thing to be intentional about is personal protective equipment (PPE).
Have you ever thought about what would be on your PPE wish list? Researchers recently looked into this question and surveyed U.S. structural firefighters about their needs for the next generation of turnout gear, with a particular focus on mobility, comfort, and functional design.
The 2023 study found that firefighters identified several key areas for improvement. Many respondents highlighted mobility limitations, especially in the lower body, noting that the crotch area of turnout pants restricted movement. Firefighters also emphasized the need for better integration between components — such as the hood and collar — improved closure systems, and easier access to tools and radios. Heat stress remained a major concern, with many calling for enhanced ventilation or other passive cooling features.
